Jiri Tomiska

Tomiska was born in Brno, Czech Republic and spent his student years there. After coming to Toronto, Canada, he studied drawing and experimental painting at the Ontario College of Art in the 1990s. At first it was drawing that most appealed to him: picking up a piece of charcoal, a large sheet of paper, taking a look, and making a line. The possibility opened up on the paper to create something at once unexpected and faithful to observation.

He has had several studios in Toronto, the most interesting one in the bohemian Liberty Village. The dilapidated factory was leaky, exposed, covered in rust, and pervaded by an oily smell. The huge spaces with high ceilings were rented by artists, rock bands, carpenters, and various down-and-out people. The rent was as cheap as it gets. Through the broken window of the studio one had a view of the railway, of the highway viaduct, of the car lights, and of the mighty slopes of the billboards. And from behind this wonderful chaos the surface of lake Ontario shone through—the Canadian wilderness.

Narodil se a chodil do školy v Brně. Po příchodu do kanadského Toronta studoval kresbu a experimentální malbu na Ontario College of Art v 90.letech. Nejvíc ho láká vzít uhel, velký papír, podívat se, a udělat čáru. Cítí tu otevřenou možnost na čistém papíře vytvořit neco neočekávaného, ale přesně odpozorovaného. Měl několik ateliérů v Torontu. Nejbarvitější byl ten první, v bohémské Liberty Village. V polorozpadlé tovární budově zatékalo, fučelo, všude rez, vůně kolomazi. Obrovské prostory s vysokánskými stropy si pronajímali malíři, sochaři, rockové skupiny, tesaři, a různí ztroskotanci. Nájem byl nejnižši možný. Popraskaným oknem ateliéru byl výhled na železnici, na viadukt dálnice a svištící auta, na mohutné sloupy reklamních bilbordů. A za tím vším nádherným a uvolněným zmatkem prosvítalo jezero Ontario, kanadská příroda.
